Common dolphins & flying fish feeding frenzy

Yesterday was a great day, we sighted dolphins on the edge of the bay. The pod had around 200 individuals including mothers and newborns again! They were spread out and keeping very low in the water, accompanied with the presence of shearwaters.

Then, the fun began! The dolphins were chasing flying fish. Flying fish has streamlined torpedo shape body, which helps them gather enough underwater speed to break the surface, and their large, wing-like pectoral fins get them airborne. They are thought to have evolved this remarkable gliding ability to escape predators, such as common dolphins.

We saw several catches. We also managed to photograph one sub-adult dolphin with one of the flying fish hanging out of its mouth! A great day!!!

Remember, by following cetacean protocol and practicing dolphin watching responsibly, you will enjoy these amazing animals with minimal impact on their behaviour, while keeping them safe.
