The Bay & Strait of Gibraltar have been awarded Important Marine Mammal Area (IMMA) status
Couple of months ago, 26 sites have been awarded Important Marine Mammal Area (IMMA) status in the Mediterranean as a step toward better protection for marine mammals and habitat conservation. The Bay and Strait of Gibraltar falls into this category.
It took a long 4 year process to get here to the very first Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs) in the Med. Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs) are defined as discrete portions of habitat, important to marine mammal species, that have the potential to be delineated and managed for conservation. This work is a collaboration between the IUCN Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force, Tethys, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, International Committee on Marine Mammal Protected Areas, ACCOBAMS and Eulabor with funding by MAVA Foundation.
